Congressional candidate Rollins says crackdown on Hong Kong is unacceptable.
Keystone Heights, Fla., May 27, 2020 – Republican congressional candidate Gavin Rollins today called on the Trump administration to consider all options to punish China if it continues its crackdown on Hong Kong.
“The world economy is in shambles because of the communist Chinese leadership’s lies and deceptions about the coronavirus,” said Rollins. “Now they’re using the crisis they created as an excuse to take away Hong Kong’s guaranteed freedom and autonomy.”
Rollins said sweeping national security laws which the Chinese leadership plans to implement in the former British colony go against the ‘one-country, two-systems’ constitutional principle agreed to when Hong Kong became a region of China in 1997.
“The Trump administration has a range of options to punish China if it continues to threaten Hong Kong’s autonomy,” said Rollins. “They could impose controls on transactions and freeze assets of Chinese officials and businesses, or they could strike a major blow to the communists by declaring Hong Kong is not autonomous from China and therefore doesn’t qualify for favored nation status.”
The state department is due to certify Hong Kong’s autonomy under the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act President Trump signed into law last year. A decision not to certify would allow the U.S. to reconsider Hong Kong’s special trade status.
“A negative determination on Hong Kong’s autonomy would undermine it as a financial hub and have serious economic impact,” said Rollins. “That would be a dramatic step, but the Communist Chinese government leaders need to know we will consider all options to punish their rogue behavior. Hong Kong cannot remain a financial hub if China takes over.”
Rollins, a Clay County Commissioner, high school teacher and captain in the Florida National Guard, is seeking to replace retiring Congressman Ted Yoho in Florida’s third congressional district.
